Last weekend we were on complete lockdown due to the amounts of snow coming down. While I street was plowed on a regular basis, it was still complete chaos out there. Even though I wanted nothing more than to throw the kids in the car, grab a coffee and just drive, it wasn’t worth the risk. So in order to save my sanity on Saturday afternoon we decided to have some fun in the kitchen. I have never been so thankful for having an extra box of cake mix in the cupboard. Clearly this was a lesson learned, always keep your pantry stocked! So I grabbed a box of good old Betty Crocker out and we set out to make some cupcakes.
Now I know what you’re thinking cake mix cupcakes only take 5 minutes to mix and 20 minutes to bake so that wasn’t going to kill much time. And really once they go into the oven you have to listen to the
“are they done yet”
for the next 20 minutes. I mean you could have some fun with it and play a little game, sip of wine for every time they ask perhaps? But then you would be half way through a bottle in 20 minutes and your decorating would be very sub par. Anyways there was no day drinking for this mom so I needed something to keep Hazel entertained while the cupcakes baked. Remembering that I had a decent stash of pipe cleaners in the basement I thought it would be fun to create some cupcake toppers out of them using cereal from the pantry. Not only would it keep her busy for a bit but it would work on her fine motor skills. So I took a handful of pipe cleaners, twisting them into heart shapes, leaving the bottom open so she could string the cereal on. Once she had strung the cereal on I closed up the bottoms, leaving enough of an end so we could stick them into the cupcakes and voila, our cake toppers were done.
Since it’s Valentines Day tomorrow these would make the perfect little treat to send along for school parties. The best part is they are super easy to make and can be done while your cupcakes bake and cool! I know it won’t be long before I’m that mom scrambling the night before to get a treat ready for the class and I will definitely be keeping these in mind for future parties.
