Christmas Card Photos {Why you should hire a professional photographer}

Did you catch a peek of our Christmas cards from Minted the other day? (If you missed that post you can find it here.) Well that lovely family picture that’s on it, was taken by none other than myself! Yup, that’s right, I got to play photographer, taking our very own picture for our Christmas cards. I only did this for one reason and that is knowing when we were going to have our family mini session and that I wouldn’t have enough time to order cards and send them out by the time I got the edited pictures back. So I decided to solve that problem by dragging my cute little family to an off leash dog park and plopping them in the middle of a field. Yes, you read that right, an off leash dog park. Need I say more?

While we had a lot of fun dressing up in coordinating outfits and watching strangers stop and chat with us, I definitely learnt a few things.

  1. Dog parks are not the place to go for family photos (see above picture)
  2. You must have patience when dealing with a toddler (see above picture)
  3. Your toddler will step in poo and still remember it weeks later
  4. Let your toddler bring something with them, such as a favourite car or stuffed animal to have in the picture. I picked this tip up from Kailee Wright, see her tips here. (Isn’t her family gorgeous?)
  5. Don’t let your toddler bring a stuffed animal to a dog park, a random dog will take it, duh.
  6. Take a million and five pictures as chances are 1 will be good. (See Hazels scowl below)
  7. Make sure your hair isn’t covering your babies face (see below picture)
  8. Try and hide the remote as best as possible
  9. Keep all the “imperfect” photos as they provide the best laughs and will remind you of that crazy time you took your family to a dog park for pictures.
  10. Always, ALWAYS, pay a professional photographer to take your photos 🙂

I’m still trying to get up the courage to “pay” someone to take pics, considering I have very few pics of my kids now as they NEVER sit still unless they are watching a show… maybe that’s the key… funny show playing JUST behind the camera??? Your pics are cute <3 Great tips 🙂

I would try the toy trick, Hazel was much more comfortable when she was able to hold her stuffy in the pictures!

My first thought was…what if they sit in dog poop?? LOL
I scheduled Christmas minis for November 1st this year so I would have the pictures in time to do cards. My phone just doesn’t take great family pics… LOL

Smart that you went Nov. 1st! Ours aren’t until the 29th, but at least I can still print pictures and include them with our cards.

It wasn’t that bad, just a little distracting 😉

I think the photos are great! I’ve been planning to take our holiday photos this weekend and I’m dreading it a little. Our card last year turned out great because I just took a picture of our son and it was easy to get him to make a cute face. Now that we have two I don’t know how it’s going to be possible to get everyone smiling!

You all looked so cute. The pictures were great. I am a sucker for candid family moments. The hair in the baby’s face. That is real mom life at its finest. Seriously love these.
