Family Fun with Netflix and the Beat Bugs

The other weekend we were treated to exclusive prescreening of a new Netflix original, Beat Bugs. To be completely honest I had no idea what i was rsvping to but that it sounded like Hazel was going to really enjoy it. I also knew there was going to be several other kids her age there, making it the perfect playdate and a chance for some of us blog moms to chat. That morning I of course did some research to see what exactly we were going to watch and to help prepare myself for the many what’s and whys on the drive into Vancouver. To my surprise I found myself watching the cutest little animated trailer and it was filled with Beatles tunes! I am a sucker for classic rock so I was instantly hooked and knew Hazel would love it too.

Upon arriving at the event at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia (lucky us eh) we were completely blown away by the length the Netflix team went to transform the banquet room into a magical outdoor picnic. Everything was spot on from the red checked picnic blankets, to the finger sandwiches and watermelon slices served after the screening. They even had mini iPads on all of the picnic baskets so the kids could peruse Netflix until the main event, Hazel was stoked and on a massive sugar high from the candy bar!

I think what took the experience to the whole other level was knowing that people had flown in from Toronto and LA just so we could have this private screening and picnic party. If that doesn’t make you feel important I don’t know what will. While we were there were able to mix and mingle with the likes of Netflix, the show creator and producers. It was a really neat experience. To top it all off I found out that someone I knows husband worked on the show as an animator! How cool is that? Someone who lives 5 minutes down the street worked on this new show that my kid loves.

The show itself takes you through your typical challenges you come across as a child, following five friends (bugs) as they adventure through life, all while enter twining Beatles tunes from the “Northern Songs” catalogue into the show. As you sing along to classic favourites like Penny Lane, Yellow Submarine, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, you might pick up on some of the familiar voices behind the songs. With the likes of Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell and P!nk just to name a few of the voices behind the tunes on the show, it really is larger than life. If you are wondering when you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee and sing along while your children sit in amazement, have no fear my friend, Beat Bugs premiers on Netflix Canada tomorrow, August 3rd! I think we are going to have a really hard time keeping it to one episode, I have a feeling we might be doing a little Netflix binging tomorrow!
