5 Tips to a Successful Family Roadtrip

As we geared up for our annual family camping trip last week one thing was for sure, the to do lists and checklists were never ending. From making sure we had enough snacks for the road to ensuring the truck was road trip ready, we had a lot to do before we headed out. Thankfully we could head to our local Canadian Tire for any items that we still had to cross off our list. When comes to vehicle maintenance and camping gear they are a one stop shop! It’s easy to see why they are known for being Made for Life in Canada!

5 Tips for a Successful Family Road Trip

1. Make Lists

Make lists, lots and lots of lists. Make a list of snacks for the road, a list of clothing you are to pack, a list of your camping gear, a list of vehicle maintenance to be performed before you leave. As you pack up your car check off your lists, and just as Santa would do, check it twice!

2. Pack Snacks

Snacks are essential for road trips, especially if you are traveling with toddlers. There is nothing worse than a hangry toddler asking if you are there yet as you’ve just merged onto the highway. Pack snacks that are appropriate for the time of day you are travelling. If you are travelling in the morning think lighter snacks like fruit, granola bars and plenty of water. Save the overly sugary treats for your arrival as you will want to keep the vehicle sugar meltdown free.

3. Pack Entertainment

I know the first form of entertainment most of us tend to reach for is tv when it comes to kids but when we are on the road I like to keep that as a last resort. We pack small activities like colouring, sticker books and of course toy cars when we hit the road. While the kids are a little too young for license plate bingo we always sneak in a round or two of Eye Spy and always have our eyes peeled for wildlife to point out to the kids.

4. Check Your Gear

Check your gear before you leave. Always, always check it before you leave and if possible a few days before. The last thing you want to do is arrive at your destination and realize that something was broken or missing from the last time you used it and be scrambling to find a solution while you are out. Our camping destination has a large Canadian Tire which is perfect for last minute necessities that we might have missed but that is not always the case. By checking your gear a few days before it leaves you from doing that last minute scramble and panic and makes for a smooth set up.

5. Give Your Vehicle a Once Over

Most often this is the one thing that is forgotten before road trips but is probably one of the most important things to do. When headed out on the road for a long period of time the last thing you want to do is run into vehicle trouble. By giving your vehicle a good once over you are most likely to avoid any problems. Check your lights and signals, check your tire pressure, top up washer fluid, change your cabin filter and of course perform an oil change.

5 Tips to a Successful Family Roadtrip

We stopped by our local Canadian Tire last week and picked up some Quaker State® Advanced Durability™ Motor Oil in order to perform an oil change before we head out this weekend. When performing an oil change at home be sure to double check your owner’s manual to ensure you are purchasing the appropriate oil for your vehicle.

Have you ever preformed an oil change at home before? If so do you have any tips or tricks to share that make the process easier?

Happy Road Tripping Everyone!
