Dining Room Make Over
If you follow along on Instagram, specifically Instagram stories, you know that last year I took upon the task of refinishing a hutch for our dining room. What started out as a quick refinishing project to fill a void in our dining area turned into a long and drawn out dining room make over.
You see not long after I started my project I found out I was pregnant with Ryerson, no big deal right? Well I was so sick in the beginning and it was so hot that summer that the project just got pushed aside and pushed aside. As the fall approached and my sickness slowed down, the crazyness of the fall took over and before I knew it that third trimester fatigue creeped in. Eventually, after he was born, I got around to finishing it and was on to the next project, refinishing a table.
Dining Room Make Over
I found a round oak table with a leaf online for $20 and set to work refinishing it. For $20 the table was in really good condition and is plenty big enough for our family of five. I opted to finish both projects in a shade of white, with black accents, think hardware and chair legs, to match with the cabinetry in our kitchen.
I struggled a bit when picking out chairs for the table, because kids. I thought about going with solid wood chairs in white but have found that our barstools have turned a slight yellow from the kids fingers (especially Everett’s). I ended up going with fabric covered chairs, removable fabric, from IKEA. I figured it was easier and more affordable to wash and replace covers than having to replace whole chairs if they were to stain. I have currently left them with the original white covers, well they are no longer white on the seat side but you can’t see that, haha. I have my eyes peeled for a slightly darker colour, like a gray or even a fun colour should anything come up in the near future.
Once the table and the buffet were in and finished one thing because apparent, the light fixtures we had needed to go. The ones we had originally came with the house and were a bit too modern for the furniture we had now switched too. I also wanted to swap out the brushed nickel and replace it with darker fixtures that would match the black accents we picked. Thankfully Wayfair came to my rescue and I was able to find both a new dining table light and two new pedants for the island. Wayfair has been my go to for accent pieces and even some of our bigger furniture since we moved. Our bed, entryway bench, Ryerson’s nursery chair and more are all from Wayfair. I love that I can browse and save idea boards as I go.
Now that the furniture is all finished and the lighting hung, I think the only thing missing from the dining room make over is replacing all the hardware on the kitchen cabinets. They are currently nickel. I am thinking of switching them over to dark coloured hardware, I am just too chicken to pull the trigger. The cabinets on the bottom are a dark brown so I’m not sure it would go? And if I do that do I swap out the sink tap for a nice dark one as well? Go big or go home right? Which is exactly what we are doing to our house, slowly making it our home.

I absolutely love your kitchen! I have a white kitchen as well. It’s actually one of the reasons we bought this place. 6 months ago. It does need a few me touches and wayfair is amazing for that. I love everything Laurel Modern Farmhouse! I would buy it all if I could!
On the list would be that dining room table light!
Love that buffet 😍😍😍 and good call with the removable cushions!
We just moved into a new place and we need so much! But definitely a coffee table and rug first!
Love the way your hutch turned out! It’s so nice to have the odd piece of original furniture!
Turned out sooo good! I love the hutch
We just bought and moved into our first home and need everything! Definitely a coffee table an rug are first on the list! 😀
I would love to get a storage ottoman.
I need to get additional shelving in the kitchen.
Your kitchen is soooo beautiful! I love how you think about the flow, function and how the room will grow with your family. I’m currently working on my children’s room and almost done (after slowly working on it for the past two years ha!) I’d love to refresh my own room. I have had my eye on a nice head board and a friend of mine got hers from Wayfair! That would be on my wishlist ☺️
On my wishlist is a nice new light (that hangs quite a bit!) For my stairwell that is like 12 feet high..
I really need new kitchen chairs!
A chair hammock is on my Wayfair wishlist.
We have so many projects on the go, but top of the list is a new rug for our family room!
New towels are on my wish list 😁
I’ve been eyeing the Arehart Storage Ottoman for a while!
A carpet for the living room and side table lamps.
Would like to get some new patio chairs.
A bunkbed for the kids is on my wish list 😊
Love the monochrome look 🖤
I love all the white in your kitchen/dining room..it never goes out of style!
A chandelier from Wayfair is currently on my wishlist, I am thinking about this Sputnik one for my front entry: https://www.wayfair.ca/lighting/pdp/langley-street-benites-12-light-sputnik-chandelier-lgly6480.html
Looks great!! I’m doing my bedroom right now too.
Obsessed with your lighting choices!!
The ladder bookcase is adorable!!
I would love some new bedding, perhaps the Rauscher 6 Piece Duvet Cover Set or the Bernadette Linen Reversible Duvet Cover Set
i am absolutely loving the Valazquez 3 Piece Coffee Table Set
I really love this light fixture, I’m pretty sure it’s the one you got. It would look great in my kitchen!
I love the light fixtures you picked out, and how bright your dining room – beautiful job! I’d love to revamp our bedroom so on my wish list are the Leatham Upholstered Wingback Headboard (similar to the one you picked I believe!) and some greenery – the Leaf Floor Foliage Tree in Planter and the Mini Tree in Basket are my faves!
I am on Wayfair.ca almost daily so the wish list is LONG! lol. Next up is either a light for the Dining Room or a rug for the kitchen.
Love Wayfair! We bought tons from them when we were building our house. Currently on my wish list is a ladder shelf and anything Christmas related!
Lovely! Great picks from Wayfair! We hope to do a little bedroom makeover soon but right now on the top of our wish list is a mattress (10″ Medium Plush Gel Memory Foam Mattress)!
Beautiful refresh! I have been thinking about about changing up the hardware on the kitchen cabinets too but can’t decide on a finish. In the meantime I’d love to clear up the lobby now and add more storage, so on my Wayfair wish list are the Gainsborough Wood Storage Bench, Birch lane Storage Ottoman, and the Adair Etagere Bookcase.
I’m currently wanting a new floor lamp!
