This week on our Maternity Feature we have Emily from Emily Leeman Photography here answering all of our questions on booking a maternity shoot. Emily is a newborn photographer based out of Maple Ridge, BC. She is married to her high school sweet heart with whom she has two adorable little boys. After having her first son, Noah, in 2010, Emily’s passion for newborn photography was born. With her natural talent and an eye for the perfect shot she began investing in equipment, props and countless courses. She excelled quickly and since has been filling hundreds of homes with everlasting memories. Below is my interview with Emily on recommendations for booking a maternity session. She answers questions such as how far in advance should I book and what should I wear for my shoot.
How early should I book a maternity photographer?
I suggest clients book their Maternity somewhere in their second trimester. But if they decide last minute that they would like them, I always try to fit my clients in.
When is the best time during my pregnancy to photograph my “bump”?
I usually like to capture you around 32-36 weeks. I find that first time moms keep a smaller belly longer (in most cases) , so it is better to wait until around 35 weeks.
Are indoor or outdoor shoots better?
There is no right answer to this. it totally depends on what your style is and what look you are trying to achieve for your maternity photos. I’ve done everything from studio only shoots to beach shoots, it’s completely up to you.
What should I wear for my shoot?
This is totally a personal preference and how comfortable you are with your changing body. In my studio I have some materials that I like to use and I also have the moms bring a few of their favorite outfits. Jeans and a white t-shirt is one of my favorite combinations as the white shirt compliments your growing bump nicely. Some moms to be that are very comfortable I will have them in a bando and a pair of boy short underwear for some of the shoot.
How long is your average maternity shoot?
My maternity shoots run anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.
Should my partner be involved?
This is also personal preference. I have some clients that like to make it more of a family type session and I have others that it is all about the belly. I am happy to do either. It is always nice to include them in a few .
What level of retouches will I receive?
I include basic retouching in all my photos. Blemishes, color correction and a bit of smoothing and stretch mark removal.
Am I able to purchase more pictures than the original package I chose?
Absolutely! I give all my clients a gallery to view to pick their favorites. I have the option of bigger packages and adding single digital files to your chosen package.
Do you offer printing services as well?
Yes I do have printing options, I have found most of my clients want digital but I do suggest that anything bigger then 11×14 get printed professionally through me.
