Play On with Playtex Sport

Do you remember when you first got your period? While it might not seem like the most exciting thing to remember, its that turning point towards adulthood and that is definitely a milestone. I can remember exactly where I was when I got my first period, I was in grade 9 and it started while I was at school. I won’t get into any details as there’s no dramatic or embarrassing story to go with it, but what I do remember was that I was excited and maybe a little nervous. A lot of my friends had started getting theirs, its an inquisitive time with all the changes going on.

I remember having baseball that night. I was feeling nervous and anxious about what was going to happen. Was the pad going to stay in place? I couldn’t change it during the game, would it last the whole game? Would I be leaking everywhere as I ran? Would I get cramps as I ran?

Others always talked about all the problems that came with having your period, was I going to have those too?

As you might have assumed, I survived that game and went home that night with zero incidents. I continued to Play on the whole rest of the season too and the next, but sadly that was my last one. Looking back at it now part of me regrets giving up sports at such a young age. At that time I turned 16, I could drive, I wanted to work. Working meant having money, having money meant being able to purchase things, like clothes. Why was I in such a rush to work? I had my whole life ahead of me to work, I should have been spending the time I had as a kid having fun and participating in sports.

Did you know that 72% of  Canadian girls say they are unable to participate to their full potential in high school sports?  They can’t afford the fees, uniforms or transportation. They feel that high school boys get access to more sports, 48% percent say that the boys also have more choices when it comes to sports. With a young daughter at home these statistics terrify me. As much as I would like Hazel to one day get a part time job and learn the value of a dollar and hard work. I think the social skills, team work, and physical exercise from participating in sports is just as important, if not more important.

Growing up I played soccer, tennis and I did track at school and was on the swimming team. Sports is important for kids, to keep active, to be part of a team, and to also keep kids occupied and out of trouble!
