Pumping on the go with Medela Freestyle

A few Saturdays ago Evan and I ended up being kidless for the night, for the first time since we had Everett. I actually can’t remember the last time we had a night without any kids. Regardless we had a night to ourselves, but it did take a little convincing to pull together. We knew our friends were going to be up in Whistler that weekend but Evan had to work so we ultimately thought it was out of the question and didn’t even think to arrange any babysitters. Well Evan ended up coming home a little earlier than expected and we both had been feeling out of sorts lately, we were in desperate need of some time away from the kids. So the moment I realized Evan was home I made a quick call to my mom to ask her if she could take the kids for the night. She was a little hesitate at first as she knows Everett is not the best sleeper, lets face it he is the worst sleeper. But thankfully my mom agreed to take the kids for the night and a few minutes later everyones bags were packed and we were all out the door.

When I say Everett’s the worst sleeper I mean the absolute worst. He will sleep some nights until about 2am but there are other nights where its only until 11pm. From there he likes has to be sleeping on / with someone, preferably me. I was hoping that perhaps a night away from mom, would mean a night way from snuggling and would help us break that vicious cycle of wanting to nurse all night long. You see we thought we had it easy when he was two months old and started sleeping through the night. He had found his thumb (he refused a pacifier) and would happily soothe himself back to sleep. All was well in the world. Then we went to his four month check up and the doctor was not happy with his weight gain. We were told we needed to wake him up and nurse him at least once through the night. That night while I was not super excited about the thought of waking a sleeping baby I set my alarm and was ready to go. Well it’s like Everett had listened to the doctor himself and he woke up that night and EVERY night since.

So here we are a night away from the kids, we are all set to get as crazy as parents can get, I mean we get to stay up past 10 pm, but there’s one little glitch, I am a nursing mom. A nursing mom that can’t go for long inbetween nursing sessions for fear that I will explode. Could you imagine here we are in this beautiful hotel room with a king size bed (and no kids kicking us) yet I am waking up in a giant pool of breastmilk? Not only that but breast milk is liquid gold and there is no way I would want it to go to waste. With Hazel this was something I never had to worry about as she was weaned by the time she had any sleepovers. While pumping is not new to me, pumping on the go is. Throughout my nursing with both babies I have actively pumped using my Medela Swing I purchased when Hazel was a week old. From time to time I would pump when the kids would sleep longer than usual to ease engorgement, cherishing and saving each and every ounce for a sacred date night or times when I would go out on my own. The single action pumping of the Swing was perfect for my needs at home.

While it may seem like a daunting task, pumping on the go was actually extremely easy and convenient. Using the Medela Freestyle pump I had everything I needed to pump, store and carry my expressed milk for the weekend. The pump comes with a stylish black tote, that you would never guess was for nursing. Not only does it have plenty of room to store the pump and its accessories, there is also plenty of room to store items like your wallet, keys, phone etc. Because the pump operates on rechargeable batteries  there was no worry about finding a plug in our room, it allowed me to simple get comfy on the bed just as I would at home. If I really wanted to save even more time I could have used the handsfree attachment and pumped while getting ready, but lets face it wasn’t in that big of a rush to get home ;). Using the 2 phase expression of the Medela Freestyle pump I was able to pump both breasts in half the time as I normally would. Having never used a double pump before I was amazed at how quickly I was able to see results and then get on with enjoy the rest of my overnighter. When it was time to leave the hotel there was no worry about transporting the breast milk home safely as the pump comes with cooler bag and icepack allowing you to safely store up to 20 ounces! Not only that but the cooler bag fit perfectly in my little tote and away we went.

The Medela Freestyle provides one the ability to express milk on the go with comfort and ease. If you ask me it’s a game changer in the pumping world and has completely changed my thoughts on pumping while out of my home, as it makes the task seem less daunting!

“Could you imagine here we are in this beautiful hotel room with a king size bed (and no kids kicking us) yet I am waking up in a giant pool of breastmilk?” <— yes, yes I can imagine! One anniversary (a few years ago)my husband and I went away for one night and left the nursling and the other 2 kids at grandma's but for some reason it didn't occur to me that I should bring my pump with me… Such a terrible night! I was wrapped in a giant fluffy towel but it was all rolled up to try to hold the ridiculous amount of milk… I slept better when I was home with my 3 kids and nursing the baby on and off through the night. Of course baby #3 was a much better sleeper than baby number 4. It sounds like my baby and your baby would get a long great with the whole never sleeping thing
