I’ve been on the hunt for a piece of wall decor for above our entryway table pretty much since we moved in. I’ve tossed around the idea of a large mirror, gallery wall, leaving it bare, you name it I’ve thought about it. I really loved the idea of having some sort of tapestry or macrame wall hanging but I didn’t want to blow the budget on one. Finding one that is really well done can be expensive as they are often labour intensive. Then when Hazel and I were out shopping a few weeks ago and it dawned on my, why not a little Simple DIY Wall Hanging?
Hazel and I were out a few weeks ago on a marathon of errands, we had our car loaded down and our last stop of the day was Urban Barn. I had a gift card that had been sitting in my wallet for awhile now and everytime I go near that store I have the boys with me so it’s never a good idea to go in. Well I didn’t have them and Hazel loves to shop so we were on a mission, spend that gift card!
While we were on the hunt for new pretties for the living room I came across these decorative rugs that measured about 2 feet by 3 feet and thought how fun would those be hung on the wall. They were the perfect size and at $29 the perfect price point for a little project. Naturally I grabbed one with blue accents (my favourite colour) and off we went.
Simple DIY Wall Hanging
To make my DIY Wall Hanging project come to life I need 6 things;
- The Rug
- A dowl
- String or rope
- Glue Gun
- Picture Hook
Step number one: I took the rug and following the pattern on the front I folded a portion over creating a tub that I could pass the dowl through.
Step number two: Once I was happy with the size of the opening and how even it was I pulled out the glue gun and glued along the seem. Reason for using a glue gun over sewing it. A) you can’t see the glue on the other side and B) I can pull it apart and use it as rug if I no longer want it on my wall.
Step number three: Probably best to be step number one actually so the stain dries but eh this is how it happened. Measure how long you want your dowl to stick out on the sides of your rug, making sure you have enough space to tie on each side. Then cut your dowl and stain it and leave it to dry.
Step number four: Once your dowl is dry run it through your opening in the rug, making sure its even on each side.
Step number 5: Use your rope or string and tie it around each side of the dowl, creating a triangle so you can hang it.
Step number 6: Take your picture hook and place it where you want it on your wall, making sure that it is the appropriate size for your rug. This will depend on how heavy your rug is.
Step number 7: Hang your wall hanging, step back and admire your work!
Seriously my Simple DIY Wall Hanging was just that, simple. It only took me a few hours, simply because of letting the stain dry. If I opted to have the dowl unstained it would have been finished in less than 20 minutes! I love how it turned out and I’m even tempted to make more now, haha!
