A Weekend in Summerland, Our First Roadtrip as a Family of Four

This past weekend our little family of four packed up and hit the road for our very first road trip. Our destination for such occasion was the Summerland Waterfront Resort and Spa. Knowing it was only a few short hours away from home and with a name like SUMMERland, I couldn’t think of a better place to head to. While we are no strangers to the Okanogan, usually making 2-3 trips a year, Evan and I had never stayed in Summerland itself. We also knew that we would be joining a handful of other Vancouver Mom bloggers and their families with children of a similar age and couldn’t wait to relax and take in the sights.

We headed out mid morning on Friday and made excellent timing getting to the resort. I think we were all so excited for our little vacation and just wanted to get there that we only made one stop on the way up. While Everett slept pretty much the entire way, Hazel was beyond excited and did not stop talking the entire four hours of our drive. Needless to say we had one priority when we did arrive at the hotel and that was to check in and get her to the pool asap!

The Summerland Waterfront Resort and Spa is situated right on the Okanogan Lake and the views are more than impeccable. The resort is a suites only hotel, featuring studio, one bedroom and two bedroom suites. It features an on sight swimming pool, fire pit, guest barbecues, day spa and two restaurants, The Bistro and Local Lounge. It’s listed as one of the top 10 rated hotels in the Okanogan on Trip Advisor and I can most certainly see why.

Upon checking in we headed straight to our room, a one bedroom suite, to do one thing and one thing only, change into our swim suits and head straight to the pool. Before running out the door to the pool we were sure to explore our room and were blown away by the accommodations.

Our one bedroom suite included a full kitchenette and when I say full, I mean full! It even had a dishwasher! The bathroom was spacious and included an oversized soaker tub. For sleeping arrangements we had a king sized bed in the bedroom and a pull out couch in the living area. While this most certainly sleeps a family of four, I think next time I would opt to stay in a two bedroom suite, at least until the kids are a bit older. The hotel very kindly provided us with a pack n play for Everett, which meant extra space in the car as we did not have to pack our own. We did however bring Hazels toddler air mattress and I am so grateful we did. Our option for her would have been the pullout couch and at 2.5, I don’t think it was the right fit. I was much more comfortable knowing she was fast asleep, than trying to move her later from our bed to the pull out or worrying that she would roll off the king bed, as it was fairly high. It also allowed us to stay up and enjoy the room, instead of having to go to sleep when she did because she was sleeping in the main room. Needless to say a pack n play and a toddler mattress in the room with a king size bed made for tight sleeping quarters but in the end we all had a great nights sleep and that’s all that matters!

I think the highlight of our room was that we were situated on the corner of the first building, giving us the most amazing lake view. On Sunday morning I was able to lounge in the bed for a little while and sip my coffee, looking out over the lake. While we were located on the first floor, I think we might have had the best view out of the whole group! Being located on the first floor definitely had its perk though, we were situated right next to two of the key features of the resort, the pool and the fire pit. We also had an oversized balcony, that slightly wrapped around our room.

Post dip in the pool our group gathered in the ball room for wine sampling and appetizers. We sipped wines from Evolve Cellars and snacked on flat breads from Local Lounge, while the kids coloured and ran around. It was the perfect ice breaker for the husbands and kids and definitely set the perfect tone for next days jam packed day. To cap off our evening at the resort we took our wine outside and watched the sunset from the fire pit. To the kids sticky delight the resort treated us to s’mores. This was Hazels first s’mores experience and while I think she enjoyed the marshmallows more on their own, she definitely liked the idea of roasting them over the fire (with Evans help of course).

The next day we were up bright and early to enjoy a breakfast at the Bistro before heading out for a tour of Summerland. I will be sharing all about our favourite sights from the weekend, including where to get the best ice cream cone  in a few days. Until then I leave you with a few more pictures from our trip. You can also see a few from the weekend here on Instagram. I am currently dreaming about the amazing view over looking the lake and can’t wait for our next adventure at the Summerland Waterfront Resort and Spa.
